Pomegranate Extract Pomanox® Shows Potential in Slowing Age-Related Frailty in Mice, Study Finds

A recent study conducted at the University of Valencia (Spain) has revealed the potential of Euromed’s pomegranate extract Pomanox® to slow the progression of age-related frailty in mice. The study found that the extract can prevent frailty, improve motor skills, and reduce oxidative stress in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination.

As people age, the functions of the cerebellum deteriorate, leading to an increased risk of falls and accidents. The study demonstrated that Pomanox® was able to maintain antioxidant levels in elderly mice after four months of supplementation, particularly in the cerebellum. Additionally, the pomegranate extract influenced gene expression related to the apoptosis pathway, suggesting support for healthy ageing.

While no changes in grip strength and endurance were found, the results showed that pomegranate extract supplementation improved motor skills in terms of coordination and neuromuscular function and helped prevent age-related weight loss. This indicates the potential of Pomanox® to provide practical nutritional support for common health problems, such as frailty, in later life.

The health benefits of pomegranate come from punicalagins, which are powerful antioxidants. Pomanox® contains up to 30 per cent punicalagins and is obtained via a quality-controlled, sustainable local supply chain and processed with eco-friendly technology. Andrea Zangara, Head of Scientific Communication and Medical Affairs at Euromed, highlighted the potential of Pomanox® in preventing deterioration associated with normal ageing, as observed in the study.
