A Pittsburgh bagel shop and delicatessen, The Bagel Factory, located in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill North neighborhood, has been issued a consumer alert by the Allegheny County Health Department for multiple violations. The violations include storing food at unsafe temperatures, inadequate cleaning and sanitization, pest management issues, and unsafe handling of toxic items.
During an inspection, rodent droppings were found on various food contact surfaces, including equipment and sheet trays. This ‘high-risk’ violation was noted as a repeat offense. Additionally, live mice were discovered in a glue trap in the bakery section. A can of aerosol fly bait was also found behind the ice machine, posing a ‘medium risk’ to consumers.
The inspection revealed that cream cheese and other ingredients were stored at temperatures above the recommended 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Other violations included improper labeling of bulk bins, plumbing concerns, absence of a certified food protection manager, and structural issues like holes in the building.
A re-inspection of The Bagel Factory is scheduled for May 20 to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Customers are advised to be cautious until the issues are rectified.
