Pinellas African American Heritage Celebration Showcases Local Talent and Culture

LARGO — The Pinellas African American Heritage Celebration at Pinewood Cultural Park in Largo showcased the vibrancy and talent of the local Black community. The event, which returned in 2022 after a ten-year hiatus, featured a diverse range of activities and performances that highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Shauné Ferguson, the senior coordinator of strategic partnerships with Pinellas County Schools, played a pivotal role in organizing the festival. The event included a display of student artwork based on Black history and culture, as well as captivating performances by poets, a gospel chorus, the Melrose Elementary dance team, and the Gibbs High School marching band.

The celebration also aimed to provide a platform for Black-owned businesses and artists to showcase their talents. Ferguson emphasized the importance of promoting Black culture and creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs to gain exposure.

Among the noteworthy Black-owned businesses that participated in the festival, Just 1 Taste stood out with its popular St. Louis-style barbecue offerings. Owners Jerome and La Tonya Buggs have garnered a loyal following in St. Petersburg with their delectable culinary creations.
