Motorists are being urged to fill up now with the price of petrol set to rise across the country ahead of the Australia Day long weekend. A dip in Sydney petrol prices is set to end prematurely thanks to increased demand as residents travel over the long weekend. Regular unleaded petrol is currently averaging 178.2 cents per litre in Sydney, while diesel is sitting at 192.4 cents per litre.

Motorists could save up to $33.30 on a tank of petrol in Sydney by hunting around for a cheaper price. However, with the wholesale price of petrol having climbed 5.5 cents a litre in the past week, those prices are set to climb within days. Petrol prices began falling in Sydney just before Christmas, but only reached a low of 176 cents per litre, compared to mid-160 cents per litre in Adelaide and Perth. Brisbane currently has the most expensive petrol in the country, sitting at 209.9 cents a litre for regular unleaded, while Melbourne has the cheapest, at 177.5 cents.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury urged motorists to hit the bowsers before petrol prices spike, due to increased demand as families prepare to go away for the long weekend. “Unfortunately, we are seeing prices start to creep up in the Sydney market much sooner than expected,” Mr Khoury said. “The price at the bottom of the cycle in Sydney bottomed out at around 10 cents per litre higher than Adelaide and Perth, meaning Sydney has continued its 2023 trend of paying more for petrol than some of its smaller capital city counterparts.” Drivers are also being encouraged to shop around, with a huge 60.6 cents a litre price difference between Sydney’s cheapest and most expensive petrol representing a $33.30 price difference on a tank of fuel. The average price for regular unleaded across the nation’s capital cities are as follows: Brisbane – 209.9c/L and falling Adelaide – 199.1c/L and rising Canberra – 186.4c/L and slowly rising Darwin – 182.8c/L and stable Hobart – 182.8c/L and slowing rising Sydney – 178.2c/L and rising Melbourne – 177.5c/L and rising Perth – 172c/L and falling
