Patrick Schulte leads Columbus Crew to historic upset in Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal

Patrick Schulte’s heroics led the Columbus Crew to a historic upset of Tigres UANL in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal second leg. Despite an early error that put the Crew at a 2-1 aggregate deficit, Schulte redeemed himself with a 59th-minute equalizer from teammate Diego Rossi, forcing a scoreless extra time. The 23-year-old goalkeeper then delivered in the decisive penalty-kick shootout, making two epic saves to secure the Crew’s 4-3 shootout victory.

The upset result has propelled Columbus into the CCC semifinals, where they will face either Inter Miami CF or CF Monterrey later this month for a chance to advance to the tournament’s June 2 final.

Columbus head coach Wilfried Nancy expressed his pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing their resilience and commitment to playing their brand of football. With the dramatic ending, the Crew added another significant result to their history, following their 2023 MLS Cup triumph.

Looking ahead, the Crew will face either CF Monterrey or Inter Miami CF, with Nancy expressing confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion. The victory has set the stage for an exciting journey in the Concacaf Champions Cup, as the Columbus Crew continue to make waves in the tournament.
