Partial Train Derailment on Upper West Side Causes Minor Injuries

At least 24 people, mostly passengers, suffered minor injuries after a partial train derailment on the Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred when the first car of a 1 train made contact with a disabled train just north of the 96th Street station around 3 p.m. The MTA officials described it as a slow-speed, minor derailment as the subway train was leaving the station.

The conductor on that train was being treated for a minor injury. Passengers were being walked off the train to the 96th St. station, and both trains were safely evacuated with all injuries being minor. Eyewitnesses reported a scary and chaotic situation, with people screaming and crying until the fire department arrived to help them out.

The incident has caused major impacts to subway service across the city, with several train lines experiencing disruptions and suspensions. MTA officials are working to restore service by Friday morning for rush hour, but they cannot guarantee it. They advise travelers to consider alternative train lines or bus routes.

This event serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with public transportation and the importance of safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Stay tuned for updates on the restoration of subway service in the affected areas.
