Parkinson Association of Alberta Launches ‘Unshakeable’ Campaign for Parkinson Awareness Month
The Parkinson Association of Alberta (PAA) has launched the ‘Unshakeable’ campaign in preparation for Parkinson Awareness Month in April. This campaign aims to recognize the strength and resilience of Canadians living with Parkinson’s disease, as well as to celebrate the contributions of researchers, health professionals, family members, friends, and advocates.
With over 110,000 people in Canada living with Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson plus syndromes, the organization emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the challenges faced by those affected. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that impacts the nervous system and the body’s nerve-controlled functions. Despite extensive research, the definitive cause and cure for the disease remain unknown.
The PAA describes ‘Unshakeable’ as a representation of the determination and spirit of individuals living with a Parkinson’s diagnosis, along with their families and friends. It also highlights the unwavering support provided by Parkinson’s researchers, clinicians, allied health professionals, program partners, and community advocates.
As part of the campaign, a special event called the Sit ‘n Stand Challenge will be held in Edmonton and Calgary. The sit-to-stand test, also known as the sitting-rising test (SRT), is a clinical assessment used to evaluate lower body strength, balance, and functional mobility. This test is particularly significant for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, as the ability to move from seated to standing is crucial for maintaining independence and serves as an indicator of the disease’s progression.
On April 11, Sit ‘n Stand events will take place in Edmonton and Calgary, with the goal of completing 100,000 Sit and Stands throughout April, and 20,000 on Parkinson Awareness Day. Additionally, webinars and landmark lighting ceremonies across Alberta are scheduled as part of the awareness month.
