In a groundbreaking move, the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will feature an unprecedented Opening Ceremony held on the Seine River, marking a significant departure from the traditional stadium format. Scheduled for July 25, 2024, this spectacular event will see 10,500 athletes from around the globe parading on a fleet of 150 boats, with a remarkable 31 of these vessels being fully electric.
The historical significance of this event is underscored by the legacy of Gustave Trouvé, a pioneering French inventor who is credited with the creation of the outboard motor. In 1881, Trouvé was developing his electric boat prototype, ‘Le Téléphone,’ on the Seine when he had the innovative idea to detach the motor for further experimentation at home. His ingenuity laid the groundwork for modern electric boating, and it is fitting that 143 years later, electric boats will play a prominent role in the Olympic festivities.
The parade will commence at 19:30 CEST and is anticipated to last over three hours, navigating through iconic Parisian landmarks. The route will begin at the Austerlitz bridge adjacent to the Jardin des Plantes, proceed around Île Saint Louis and Île de la Cité, and conclude at the Trocadéro, where the Olympic torch will be lit, among other ceremonial protocols. Each boat will be equipped with cameras, allowing audiences worldwide to witness the athletes and the grandeur of the event.
This historic ceremony is the result of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including Paris 2024, the City of Paris, the French government, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the French National and Olympic Sports Committee (CNOSF). The successful execution of this event also owes much to the support of Haropa Port, which encompasses the ports of Le Havre, Rouen, and Paris, along with the Voies Navigables de France (VNF), an organization responsible for managing navigation on the Seine.
Both Haropa Port and VNF view the Olympics as a pivotal opportunity to promote the adoption of electric transportation on French waterways. Their vision includes achieving a completely climate-neutral river shipping system in Paris by 2037. To facilitate this goal, they have already established 44 electric charging stations along the Seine, with plans to install an additional 82 stations along the Seine and Oise rivers by the end of 2024.
In a concerted effort to electrify the fleet, Haropa Port and VNF collaborated with France’s Environmental and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and the Greater Paris Regional Authority to launch the Modernisation and Innovation Aid Programme (PAMI). This initiative provides grants and incentives aimed at supporting the electrification of private sector vessels, with a total investment of 33 million Euros (approximately $36 million) dedicated to this transformative project.
