Recent data has revealed a concerning statistic – more than 6.4 million vehicles in the U.S. still have Takata airbags, even after a decade since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated their recall due to safety risks. These airbags pose a serious threat of bodily harm or even death to occupants.
According to CARFAX data, approximately 40% of these unreplaced airbags are located in states categorized as Zone A by NHTSA, known for their high heat and humidity levels. These states include Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas.
Among the states with the highest number of unfixed Takata airbags are Texas with 788,000 vehicles, California with 739,000 vehicles, and Florida with 305,000 vehicles. Extended exposure to heat and humidity can cause these airbag inflators to deploy explosively, posing a significant risk to occupants.
NHTSA reports that these faulty airbags have resulted in 27 deaths and over 400 injuries in the U.S. so far. Despite efforts by various entities including vehicle manufacturers, government agencies, and non-profits, a large number of affected vehicles are still in operation with potentially dangerous airbags.
Faisal Hasan, CARFAX General Manager for Data, expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the importance of getting these airbags replaced promptly. Hasan highlighted that the replacement process is quick, free, and could potentially save lives.
As the issue of Takata airbags continues to persist, it is crucial for vehicle owners to check if their vehicles are affected and take necessary actions to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
