Oscar Pistorius released on parole after serving half of murder sentence

Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympian who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, has been released on parole from a South African jail after serving half of his more than 13-year sentence. Pistorius, now 37, shot Ms. Steenkamp multiple times through a door, claiming he had mistaken her for a burglar.

Under South African law, all offenders are entitled to be considered for parole once they have served half their total sentence. Pistorius will be living under strict parole conditions until his sentence expires in 2029, including confinement to his home for certain hours of the day, a ban on alcohol consumption, and restrictions on speaking to the media. He will also be required to undergo therapy to address issues related to gender-based violence and anger.

June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, expressed acceptance of the decision to release Pistorius on parole, acknowledging that parole is part of the South African legal system. However, she questioned whether there has been justice for Reeva and if Pistorius has served enough time, emphasizing that no amount of time served will bring Reeva back.

Despite the parole board’s affirmation of the South African justice system, June Steenkamp emphasized that the family is the one serving a life sentence and expressed her desire to focus on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation to continue her daughter’s legacy.

While in prison, Pistorius was reported to have engaged in various activities, including driving a tractor, working in the library, and cleaning inmates’ cells. Social workers and psychologists provided positive reports about him during his time in prison.
