Old Supercomputer for Sale in Wyoming

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own supercomputer to aid in your quest for world domination, now might be your chance. An old supercomputer, the Cheyenne Supercomputer, is currently up for sale in Wyoming. This behemoth of a machine was once ranked in the top 20 of global computing power when it was installed in 2016 for atmospheric simulation and earth sciences.

The Cheyenne Supercomputer boasts impressive specs, featuring a Silicon Graphics ICE XA system with a whopping 8,064 processors at 18 cores each, totaling 145,152 cores, and a massive 313,344 GB of memory. While it originally ran on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server OS, the new owner can customize it with their preferred operating system.

Currently listed on a government auction site, this decommissioned supercomputer is still in working condition and awaits a new owner. With a current bid just over $40,000 and the reserve price not yet met, interested buyers have until May 3rd to make a move.

Despite its impressive capabilities, the Cheyenne Supercomputer has been surpassed by newer models in the fast-paced world of supercomputing. While it may not compete with the latest technology, it remains a formidable machine for many applications.

As the auction continues, the question arises: who would be interested in purchasing an old supercomputer? Would its energy consumption and size make it more suitable for recycling, or does it still hold value for certain projects? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below.
