2024 has been a challenging year for the Oak Ridge Boys, as they have faced a series of hardships and tragedies. It all began in January when Joe Bonsall, a longstanding member of the band, announced his departure due to health issues. Bonsall, who had been with the group for five decades, revealed on social media that a neuromuscular disorder had progressed to the point where he could no longer continue touring with the band.
Following Bonsall’s departure, the band experienced a string of heartbreaking losses. In March, Donnie Guitar Carr, the group’s guitarist, mourned the passing of his mother, Phyllis Faye Carr, who was not only a beloved family member but also a part of the Oak Ridge Boys’ extended family.
Tragedy struck again on Easter Sunday when the band lost two more cherished members. The year continued to be marked by sorrow as the Oak Ridge Boys faced one loss after another.
Despite the hardships, the Oak Ridge Boys had started 2023 on a positive note, receiving accolades such as a Tennessee Music Pathways marker and announcing a farewell tour. However, the momentum from the previous year did not carry over into 2024.
As the band navigates these difficult times, they have shown resilience and strength in the face of adversity. The Oak Ridge Boys’ journey in 2024 serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with our loved ones.
