Nicki Minaj Stops Performance of ‘Starships’ and Expresses Dislike for Song

Nicki Minaj made headlines on New Year’s Eve when she abruptly stopped her performance of her 2012 hit single ‘Starships’ at a show in Miami, expressing her dislike for the song. In a video posted to TikTok, the rapper can be seen allowing the crowd to sing most of the lyrics before signaling for the backing track to stop, stating, ‘I don’t perform that song no more, y’all. I don’t like it, what y’all want me to do? Stupid song.’

This isn’t the first time Minaj has voiced her distaste for ‘Starships.’ In a 2020 interview with Pollstar Live, she expressed her regret for recording the song, saying, ‘I hate ‘Starships,’ I mean ew, ‘Starships?’ I’m like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it.’

She also revealed her dissatisfaction with some of her other hits, including ‘Anaconda’ and ‘Your Love,’ despite liking the accompanying music videos. Despite her reservations about certain tracks, Minaj had a busy year in 2023, releasing her fifth studio album ‘Pink Friday 2,’ hosting the MTV VMAs for the second time, and collaborating with various artists.

Minaj is also gearing up for her international Pink Friday 2 World Tour, set to visit 37 cities between March and June. With her ongoing success and upcoming tour, it’s clear that Minaj’s career is far from slowing down, despite her aversion to certain past hits.
