New York Art Dealer Brent Sikkema Found Dead in Brazil

New York art dealer Brent Sikkema has tragically passed away in Brazil, confirmed by his gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. The 75-year-old was found dead in his apartment in the affluent neighborhood of Jardim Botânico, Rio de Janeiro. The Civil Police have confirmed the investigation into his death.

Reports from Rio de Janeiro suggest that Sikkema was murdered, as he was found stabbed with a sharp object. His lawyer, Simone Nunes, expressed her inability to reach him prior to the tragic incident. She discovered his body on a bed in his home, where security cameras may potentially provide crucial evidence.

Sikkema, who had been in Brazil for Christmas and had applied for a visa to move to the country, was due to return to New York. The U.S. State Department has confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen in Rio de Janeiro and extended their condolences to the family, offering appropriate assistance.

Born in 1948 and raised in Morrison, Illinois, Sikkema’s career in the art world began in 1971. He later established the renowned Sikkema Jenkins & Co gallery in New York, which showcased prominent artists such as Jeffrey Gibson, Vik Muniz, and Kara Walker.

Following the news of his untimely passing, the gallery released a statement mourning the loss and vowing to continue in his spirit.
