New NiSi ATHENA Prime Lenses Released

New NiSi ATHENA Prime Lenses Released

NiSi has recently announced the addition of three new lenses to their ATHENA line, filling some gaps and extending the tele-reach while maintaining similar optical and physical characteristics. The ATHENA 18mm T2.2, 40mm T1.9, and 135mm T2.2 are the latest additions to the lineup, offering creative professionals more options for their cinematography needs.

About a year ago, NiSi launched their ATHENA prime line, which aimed to provide relatively affordable cine prime lenses. Traditionally, cine prime lines tend to be on the more expensive side, but NiSi and other manufacturers have managed to lower prices to an unheard-of range of around $1,000 per lens. Despite their affordability, these lenses are said to offer impressive image quality and a great user experience. The ATHENA line features aligned focus and aperture rings, similar size and weight across the line, and similar optical characteristics, making them accessible to a wider creative audience.

The ATHENA line features relatively compact yet fast T1.9 lenses. The aperture speed slows down in the wide and tele fringe to T2.2 for the 18mm and 135mm, and T2.4 for the 14mm. The lenses weigh around 800g/1.75lb with the PL mount and are slightly heavier with a mirrorless mount. The focus and aperture rings are geared, and markers are printed using luminous color.

While some manufacturers have opted for a more ‘vintage’ look, NiSi has tuned the ATHENA series for better sharpness and a cleaner look. This latest release is expected to offer cinematographers even more versatility and quality in their work.
