Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Netflix has released a new romance series that is sure to tug at the heartstrings of viewers. One Day, based on David Nicholls’ best-selling 2009 novel of the same name, follows the tumultuous relationship between Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew over the course of more than a decade.
The series, which premiered on February 8, is set in Edinburgh on July 15, 1988, and revolves around the fateful night of their college graduation. Despite their contrasting backgrounds and personalities, a failed one-night stand leads to a friendship that continually teeters on the brink of something more.
One Day was previously adapted into a film in 2011, but the miniseries format is believed to offer a more compelling and nuanced retelling of the story. According to Nicholls, the series allows each chapter to be a standalone story with its own style and tone, providing a level of creative freedom for the screenwriters.
The new adaptation is helmed by series creator Nicole Taylor, known for her work on Wild Rose, and features Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall in the lead roles. Nicholls, serving as an executive producer, expressed his confidence in the miniseries format, highlighting its potential to deliver a more comprehensive depiction of his original work.
