NetEase Responds to Backlash Over ‘Non-Disparagement’ Clause in Marvel Rivals Preview Contract

NetEase, the publisher of the upcoming hero shooter Marvel Rivals, recently faced backlash over a controversial ‘non-disparagement’ clause in their preview contract for streamers and video makers. The clause, which prohibited creators from making negative comments or comparisons about the game, was criticized by well-known streamer Brandon ‘Seagull’ Larned.

Following Larned’s public criticism on Twitter, NetEase swiftly responded by retracting the restrictive requirement and acknowledging that the terms were ‘inappropriate and misleading.’ The company issued a statement on the game’s Discord channel and to PCGamesN, announcing their intention to amend the contract.

Marvel Rivals, a 6v6 hero shooter game featuring popular comic book superheroes, is currently in its first closed alpha playtest phase. Content creators participating in the alpha were initially required to agree to terms that restricted them from making disparaging comments, satirical remarks, or negative reviews about the game.

Larned’s objection to the stringent terms shed light on the issue, prompting NetEase to take prompt action in revising the contract to be less restrictive for streamers and video makers. The company expressed regret for the miscommunication and inconvenience caused to participants in the playtest.

NetEase’s swift response to the criticism stands out in an industry where companies have often faced backlash for similar missteps. By acknowledging the error and committing to a more transparent and fair contract, NetEase aims to foster a positive relationship with content creators and the gaming community.
