Nestlé USA Recalls Metallic Mugs Sold with Starbucks Gift Sets Due to Burn and Laceration Hazards
Nestlé USA has issued a recall for metallic mugs that were sold with Starbucks-branded gift sets due to potential burn and laceration hazards. The recall affects about 440,500 units of metallic mugs included in 2023 Holiday Starbucks-branded Gift Sets.
Product Hazard
The hazard arises when the mugs are microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, as they can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration risks.
Recall Details
The recall involves four gift sets containing a ceramic mug with metallic coating that bears Starbucks branding. These sets were sold in 11 oz. and 16 oz. sizes as part of various gift sets during the 2023 holiday season, including Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.
Consumer Remedy
Consumers are advised to immediately discontinue using the recalled mugs and can opt for a full refund by returning them to the place of purchase or contacting Nestlé USA. Refunds can be obtained in the form of cash, gift card, or a check from Nestlé USA, with no proof of purchase required for a full refund.
Incidents/Injuries
There have been 12 incidents reported, including 10 injuries such as severe burns and blisters on fingers or hands, as well as one cut on a finger. One incident required medical attention.
Where They Were Sold
The affected mugs were sold online and in-store at Target and Walmart, as well as through Nexcom (military retail outlets) nationwide from November 2023 through January 2024, with prices ranging from $10 to $20 depending on the gift set.
