Mother Uses Electric Car to Power Son’s Dialysis Machine During Power Cut

An inspiring story emerged from Queensland, Australia, where a woman used her electric car to power her son’s dialysis machine during a power cut caused by storms. Kristy Holmes, a 42-year-old electric vehicle owner, utilized her car’s emergency power system to ensure her 11-year-old son, Levi, received life-saving treatment when their power shut off on Christmas Day.

When storms and flash flooding hit south-east Queensland, leaving many residents without power, electric vehicle drivers with ‘vehicle to load’ systems, which can act as an emergency generator, stepped in to help. Holmes, who owns a BYD electric car, initially used it to power fridges for her family and neighbors. However, when the power outage persisted, she realized the car could also support Levi’s dialysis machine, preventing him from facing life-threatening health consequences.

Levi, who is awaiting a transplant, would have been at risk if not for his mother’s quick thinking and the innovative use of their electric car. Holmes’ act of using her vehicle for a life-saving purpose showcases the potential for electric cars to serve as more than just a mode of transportation, highlighting their capacity to make a positive impact in critical situations.
