Milwaukee Prepares for 2024 Republican National Convention Amid Security Concerns

After months of preparation, Milwaukee is set to host the 2024 Republican National Convention. However, the city is now grappling with the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

While the RNC officially kicks off on Monday and is scheduled to run through Thursday, significant events have already taken place. The Journal Sentinel provided live coverage throughout Sunday.

Live Updates from the Republican National Convention 2024 in Milwaukee

Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed frustration with the state legislature for not allowing the city to limit guns near the Republican National Convention due to existing state laws. Despite this setback, Johnson expressed confidence in the security protocols in place for the RNC this week. He mentioned that the City of Milwaukee would have preferred to enforce stricter regulations on firearms around the convention area, but state laws prohibit cities from imposing gun restrictions that exceed state regulations.

Firearms are prohibited within the credentials-only security perimeter around Fiserv Forum but are permitted in the security ‘footprint’ just outside the perimeter.

Governor Tony Evers urged the Secret Service to reconsider the policy allowing guns in the area immediately outside the RNC perimeter, emphasizing that this is a State of Wisconsin concern rather than a Secret Service matter.

Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to make an appearance at the convention on Monday, as confirmed by RNC committee member David Bossie in an interview with WISN-TV (Channel 12). Bossie expressed anticipation for the reception Trump will receive, describing it as an emotional and overwhelming experience. Trump, who is yet to announce his vice presidential pick, has indicated that changes have been made to his keynote speech in light of the recent events.

As the Republican National Convention unfolds in Milwaukee, the city and event organizers are navigating security challenges and adjusting plans in response to the attempted assassination and the evolving political landscape.
