Midwest Grocers Recall Cream Cheese Spreads Due to Salmonella Contamination

Three regional grocers in the Midwest, Hornbacher’s, Hy-Vee, and Schnuck Markets, are issuing a recall for various cream cheese spreads due to potential salmonella contamination. Hy-Vee, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is recalling two types of Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread and bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix sold in over 280 retail stores across eight Midwestern states.

Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable populations, may lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Customers who have purchased the affected products are advised to either dispose of them or return them for a refund.

Separately, Schnuck Markets, headquartered in St. Louis, is recalling three cheese spreads potentially contaminated with salmonella. These include Schnucks Whip Cream Spread, Schnucks Strawberry Spread, and Schnucks Cream Cheese Spread, each with specific best-by dates.

Both Hy-Vee and Schnucks have confirmed using the same cream cheese supplier, Schreiber Foods of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The recall was initiated after Schreiber Foods informed a vendor, Topco Associates based in Itasca, Illinois, about the issue.
