Microsoft to Retire Copilot Pro’s GPT Builder in July 2024

Microsoft has announced its decision to retire Copilot Pro’s GPT Builder, a move that will take effect in July. This decision comes as the tech giant aims to prioritize core experiences within the Copilot Pro platform.

Starting July 10, 2024, Microsoft will discontinue support for GPT Builder in Copilot Pro, leading to the removal of all GPTs created by Microsoft and its customers, along with associated GPT data. This strategic shift is intended to focus on enhancing core Copilot Pro functionalities.

Earlier this year, in January, Microsoft introduced a paid subscription tier for Copilot, known as Copilot Pro. This subscription grants users exclusive access to the AI model and allows them to leverage its capabilities directly from Microsoft Office applications like Word and PowerPoint. Priced at $20 per month, Copilot Pro offers similar functionalities to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus subscription.

With the upcoming changes, Microsoft will no longer support the creation of GPTs using Copilot Pro after July 10, 2024. During the transition period from July 10 to July 14, 2024, all existing GPTs and associated data will be removed from the platform.

Microsoft’s statement regarding the decision reads, “We are continuing to evaluate our strategy for consumer Copilot extensibility and are prioritizing core product experiences, while remaining committed to developer opportunities. To this end, we are shifting our focus on GPTs to Commercial and Enterprise scenarios and are stopping GPT efforts in consumer Copilot.”

Users will lose access to custom Copilot GPTs post the July 10 deadline, as Microsoft will delete these GPTs and associated data. This move aligns with Microsoft’s recent announcement to refine Copilot’s existing experiences based on user feedback, indicating a commitment to enhancing user experience without compromising functionality.

Copilot Pro, available for $20 at the Microsoft Store, offers enhanced performance and priority access during peak times compared to the free version. Additionally, users can leverage more image creator boosts to generate AI-generated images within a day. The premium version also unlocks AI features in Office applications, a feature not available in the free version.
