In a recent move aimed at enhancing user experience, Microsoft has introduced an optional update for Windows 11, designated as KB5040529, specifically for the 24H2 version. This update follows the previous releases of non-security updates for both Windows 11 and Windows 10, which were rolled out at the end of July 2024.

The KB5040529 update, also known as Build 26100.1301, features a variety of enhancements and new functionalities, categorized into gradual and normal rollout phases. This structured approach indicates how users will receive the new features once they opt to update their systems.

Key Features of the Windows 11 24H2 Update

Among the notable changes introduced in this update are:

Emoji 15.1 Support

One of the exciting additions is the support for Emoji 15.1. This update allows users to utilize new Unicode symbol-like shapes for family groupings, while continuing to use traditional people emojis. The new emoji options include:

  • Horizontal and vertical head shake
  • Phoenix
  • Lime
  • Brown mushroom
  • Broken chain

Account Management Enhancements

The Start menu has also seen significant improvements with the introduction of a new account manager. Users who sign in with a Microsoft account will now have quick access to their account benefits, making it easier to manage account settings directly from the Start menu. Additionally, users can now drag applications from the pinned section of the Start menu directly to the taskbar for enhanced accessibility.

Windows Backup Improvements

Another noteworthy feature is the enhanced Windows Backup functionality. Users can now back up various sound settings, including the sound scheme, by enabling the ‘Remember my preferences’ option and selecting the relevant checkboxes under Personalization and Other Windows settings. This feature will allow for seamless restoration of settings on new devices using the Windows Backup app.

Lock Screen Customization

The lock screen has also been updated to display sports, traffic, and finance content alongside weather updates. Users can activate this feature by navigating to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.

File Explorer Enhancements

File Explorer has received a usability boost with the ability to drag files between breadcrumbs in the address bar. This feature simplifies navigation by allowing users to move files directly between different locations in the path shown in the address bar, such as This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files.

Account and Device Management

The Settings menu has been updated to include a new page under Settings > Accounts called Linked devices. This page allows users to manage their PCs and Xbox consoles, providing a centralized location for device management. This feature is available for Home and Pro editions when signed in with a Microsoft account.

Additionally, a new ‘Add now’ button has been introduced in Settings > Accounts, enabling users to add a recovery email address if they haven’t done so already. This button will only appear when users are signed into their Microsoft account.

Game Pass Recommendations

Lastly, the update features a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings home page, providing users with tailored suggestions for games based on their preferences.

How to Access the Update

Users interested in downloading this optional update can do so manually through the Windows Update settings. It’s important to note that while this update is not mandatory, it offers several enhancements that could significantly improve user experience and system functionality.
