Microsoft Addresses Secure Boot Bypass Vulnerability in Windows 10 and 11 Updates

Microsoft recently released the July 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11, addressing various issues and bringing improvements. Among these updates, Microsoft also addressed a major issue that has been causing problems for Windows 10 and 11 users.

The company issued Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates KB5034441 for Windows 10 and KB5034440 for Windows 11 to tackle a Secure Boot bypass vulnerability known as CVE-2024-20666. However, users encountered a ‘0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE’ error message after installing these updates.

In response to this issue, Microsoft has made several adjustments. In March, a modified PowerShell script was released, and it was later clarified that users without a WinRE partition did not require the update. In May, Microsoft acknowledged that an automatic fix was not feasible, and users had to manually update the system.

Now, Microsoft has provided a detailed guide to help users determine if they need the update. For Windows 11, version 21H2, the KB5034440 update is not necessary if specific conditions are met, such as sufficient free space in the WinRE recovery partition or having an up-to-date WinRE image.

Similarly, for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2, the KB5034441 update is not required under similar conditions related to the WinRE recovery partition.

It is essential for users to check their system configurations and follow the guidelines provided by Microsoft to ensure a smooth update process and avoid encountering the ‘0x80070643’ error message.
