Michigan Hires Dusty May as New Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Michigan is set to hire Dusty May as the new head coach for the Wolverines’ men’s basketball team, following the confirmation by University President Santa Ono. May comes to Ann Arbor after a successful six-season stint at Florida Atlantic, where he achieved a remarkable 35-4 record, conference championship, and a Final Four appearance in the 2022-23 season.

The Wolverines are in need of a major rebuild after finishing with an 8-24 record last season, with most of their key players either entering the Transfer Portal or exhausting their eligibility.

Michigan coach Dusty May: Background and early years

Born on Dec. 30, 1976, in Peoria, Illinois, May developed a passion for basketball at a young age. He pursued a coaching career after his playing days and gained valuable experience as a student manager under Bob Knight at Indiana University. May then held administrative roles at USC and in Bloomington before becoming an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University.

His coaching journey included stops at Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida before taking over as the head coach at FAU in 2018. May received strong endorsements from prominent figures like Mike White, the head coach at Florida, and Mike Davis, showcasing his exceptional qualities as a coach and leader.
