Meta Introduces Travel Mode for AR Experience on Quest Headsets During Flights

Augmented reality enthusiasts have a reason to rejoice as Meta introduces a groundbreaking feature for its Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets – the Travel Mode. This innovative function allows users to enjoy AR content even while on a plane, a feat previously hindered by technical limitations.

One of the primary challenges faced by AR headsets in motion is the disruption of internal measurement units (IMUs), leading to tracking inaccuracies. However, with the introduction of Travel Mode, Meta has fine-tuned the Quest headsets’ algorithms to adapt to the motion of an airplane, ensuring a stable and seamless AR experience during flights.

By connecting the Quest 2 or 3 to the plane’s Wi-Fi, users can access content from external devices or the Quest library. It is advisable to check if certain apps require an internet connection, as in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity may vary, impacting the performance of certain content like video games.

Meta’s collaboration with Lufthansa opens up a world of exclusive content tailored for Travel Mode users. From interactive games and meditation exercises to travel podcasts and virtual sightseeing previews, passengers in Lufthansa’s Allegris Business Class Suite on select flights can indulge in a unique AR experience.

To activate Travel Mode, users can navigate to the Experimental section in the Quest headset’s Settings menu and enable the feature. Once activated, the Travel Mode can be toggled on or off conveniently through Quick Settings. While Meta plans to extend Travel Mode to other modes of transportation like trains in the future, a specific release date has not been disclosed.
