The Dimensity 9400 will be MediaTek’s first 3nm chipset that is said to take advantage of TSMC’s second-generation lithography, resulting in increased power efficiency and other benefits. As for when the SoC gets an official unveiling, the company CEO Rick Tsai stated that it will arrive in the fourth quarter of the year with boosted AI capabilities to rival other high-end smartphone chips. Alongside the Dimensity 9400, we should see Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in action, which is also said to be mass produced on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process.
Dimensity 9400 to adopt the same CPU cluster as Dimensity 9300 with no efficiency cores; advanced 3nm process should help with power draw
While no performance comparison was provided by MediaTek’s CEO, a China Times report states that the Dimensity 9400 will arrive with improved AI capabilities. The alleged CPU cluster has also been shared below, revealing that unlike Qualcomm this year, MediaTek will continue to adopt ARM’s CPU designs, upgrading to the Cortex-X5. However, one rumor claimed that the entire CPU cluster will not comprise of just Cortex-X5 cores but does mention that the Dimensity 9400 will not feature any efficiency cores, which is a configuration adopted by the Dimensity 9300 and resulted in increased multi-core performance.
As for advanced AI capabilities, the Dimensity 9400 should excel in on-device tasks, possibly exceeding the 33 billion parameters supported by the Dimensity 9300 for Large Language Models. However, like its predecessor, we could see the Dimensity 9400 get LPDDR5T memory support, as running on-device AI requires faster and more efficient RAM. Speaking of efficiency, before the start of 2024, MediaTek announced that it had collaborated with TSMC and developed the world’s first 3nm chipset, boasting a 32 percent increase in power reduction, with volume production commencing in 2024.
Though MediaTek did not explicitly mention the name Dimensity 9400, it is likely that the Taiwanese firm referred to its flagship SoC. We recently reported about the alleged Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core scores of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, and it raced laps around the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300. We expect that the Dimensity 9400 will mark the same performance leap, but to see it in action, we have to wait for the official announcement in Q4 2024.
