Measles Case Detected at Los Angeles International Airport

Los Angeles County public health officials have been alerted to a case of measles in a traveler passing through Los Angeles International Airport recently. The individual arrived at LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal B, Gate 156, via Lufthansa Flight LH 452 on Sunday at 3 p.m. before connecting to Flight LH 7852 at Terminal 7, Gate 82 at 8 p.m., according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Health officials have stated that there are no other locations where potential exposure to this traveler may have occurred. Those who may have come into contact are advised to verify with their healthcare provider if they have been vaccinated against measles. Individuals who have not been vaccinated and have not had measles in the past are at risk of contracting the disease, with symptoms potentially appearing between seven and 21 days after exposure.

Dr. Muntu Davis, LA County Health Officer, emphasized the contagious nature of measles, which can be transmitted through air and direct contact even before symptoms manifest. The disease can lead to severe complications, particularly in young children and vulnerable adults. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to the body.

Measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air and on surfaces for hours after an infected individual has left the area. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes.
