Timothée Chalamet, the talented actor, is gearing up to take on a new role in the upcoming film ‘Marty Supreme.’ This original movie, created by Josh Safdie and A24, is set to bring a fictionalized story to the big screen, inspired by the life of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman.
‘Marty Supreme’ is penned by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, with Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas joining as producers. The collaboration reunites Safdie with A24, the production company behind his previous successful films ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Good Time.’
Confirming the exciting news, A24 took to social media to announce the project, sharing the message, ‘Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME starring @RealChalamet. Coming soon.’
Marty Reisman, a legendary table tennis champion, passed away in 2012. His remarkable career began in Manhattan as a hustler, engaging in ping pong matches for bets and prizes. Throughout his time in the sport, Reisman secured an impressive 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, along with five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. Notably, at the age of 67, he participated in the United States National Hardbat Championship and became the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport. Reisman was affectionately known as the ‘wizard of table tennis’ and even showcased his ping pong comedy routine as the opening act for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Chalamet’s admiration for the Safdie brothers is well-documented, with the actor previously expressing his praise for their work in a 2019 essay for Variety. In the piece, Chalamet lauded the Safdies’ ability to consistently deliver contemporary and gritty films, highlighting their unique storytelling approach.
Following the success of ‘Uncut Gems,’ the Safdie brothers have pursued individual projects, with Josh Safdie now taking the helm for ‘Marty Supreme.’ This upcoming film marks Josh’s return to the director’s chair since ‘Uncut Gems’ and his first solo feature directorial effort since his debut film, ‘The Pleasure of Being Robbed,’ released in 2008.
