Margot Robbie, the Oscar-nominated star of Barbie, is set to produce a new film based on the classic board game Monopoly in partnership with Hasbro. The long-awaited project will be brought to the screen by Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, and Lionsgate.
LuckyChap, established in 2014, has been involved in successful productions such as I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, and Saltburn, along with TV shows like Maid and Dollface. The company aims to expand the scope of female-driven stories and storytellers in Hollywood.
Robbie’s recent hit, Barbie, grossed over $1.4 billion globally and received eight Oscar nominations. The company’s upcoming comedy, My Old Ass, garnered positive reviews at Sundance and was acquired by Amazon for distribution. Additionally, Robbie and her producing partners, including husband Tom Ackerley, are working on the R-rated Christmas comedy Naughty, directed by Olivia Wilde. LuckyChap is also in the process of bringing the popular video game The Sims to the big screen.
Notably, there have been previous attempts to adapt Monopoly into a movie, including a 2008 project with Ridley Scott and a 2019 endeavor featuring Kevin Hart. The specifics of the new adaptation remain undisclosed.
The announcement was made at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Lionsgate also revealed plans for a fresh take on The Blair Witch Project in collaboration with horror specialists Blumhouse.
