Liberal Democrats Promising Free-to-Air Premier League Games in Election Broadcast

The Liberal Democrats are making a bold move to capture the attention of England football fans with their Euro 24 election broadcast. The party is promising to revolutionize the football experience by getting Premier League games on free-to-air TV, reforming season ticket prices, and changing club ownership rules.

In a historic moment for the party, they will air their first election broadcast targeting sports fans, with Culture spokesman Tim Farron, a dedicated Blackburn Rovers fan, leading the charge. The broadcast is set to air on TalkSport following the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 game against Denmark in Frankfurt.

During the broadcast, Mr. Farron highlighted significant football moments, such as Wayne Rooney’s iconic overhead kick for Manchester United and Stephen Gerrard’s memorable slip for Liverpool, emphasizing that these moments belong to all fans, not just billionaire owners. He expressed concern over fans being priced out of the Premier League due to high subscription fees and season ticket costs.

The Liberal Democrats are advocating for a ‘free-to-air revolution’ that would mandate the Premier League to broadcast 10 games per season on terrestrial television. Mr. Farron urged viewers to consider voting for the Liberal Democrats, stating that instead of shouting at Conservative politicians on TV, they could enjoy watching football.

Speaking to MailOnline, Mr. Farron criticized the current situation where many fans are unable to watch their favorite players in the Premier League, citing the excitement of players like Saka and Rice lighting up the Euros. The party’s pledge for free-to-air TV for Premier League games aims to address this disparity and provide broader access to football for all fans.
