In a candid revelation, actress and writer Kimberley Sustad has opened up about her struggles with imposter syndrome, particularly in relation to her work on Hallmark Channel projects. Known for her prominent role in the network, Sustad has made a significant impact both in front of and behind the camera. However, she admits that the pressures associated with her success can often lead to feelings of insecurity.
During a recent interview with Us Weekly, Sustad discussed the challenges she faced while writing the script for the upcoming film Three Wiser Men and a Boy. This project follows the success of the 2022 holiday hit Three Wise Men and a Baby, which greatly raised the stakes for Sustad as she navigated the expectations that came with it. “I have been worried for so long — talk about not feeling like you’re enough, you know, having imposter syndrome. That’s me writing these movies,” the 37-year-old actress shared.
Sustad expressed how she felt thrust into the limelight after the success of Three Wise Men and a Baby, a film that became one of Hallmark’s biggest hits. The pressure to replicate that success weighed heavily on her as she worked on the sequel. “I’m like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, I’m not a profesh writer,’” she recalled, noting how fan encouragement and network expectations pushed her to continue. “People are like, ‘You are! Write another.’ You are like, ‘Oh my God, what if I can’t?’ And then everyone will know.”
Having made her Hallmark writing debut with Christmas By Starlight in 2020, Sustad compared the experience of writing a successful sequel to that of a musician crafting a hit album. “It’s like writing a hit album. And then they’re like, ‘So where’s the next song?’ I can’t imagine being that artist,” she said, highlighting the unique pressures that come with creative success.
Despite her initial concerns, Sustad remains optimistic about the follow-up film. “There’s fear and panic,” she admitted, “but I think we made a ‘better’ movie than the first.” In Three Wise Men and a Baby, viewers will follow the Brenner brothers, portrayed by Tyler Hynes, Andrew Walker, and Paul Campbell, as they care for a baby left at a fire station. The sequel will see the trio navigating the complexities of a school holiday play for the now-grown boy.
In addition to her writing contributions, Sustad will reprise her role as a doctor in a brief cameo that features a playful nod to the audience, breaking the fourth wall in a moment sure to delight fans.
As Sustad continues to carve her path in the entertainment industry, her openness about her struggles serves as an inspiration to many who face similar challenges. The pressure to succeed can be daunting, but her journey reflects resilience and dedication to her craft.
