Johnny Marr, the guitarist of the iconic band The Smiths, has taken a stand against former President Donald Trump for using the band’s music at his political rallies. Marr expressed his disapproval after a video surfaced of a Trump rally in South Dakota featuring the song ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ playing in the background.
In response to the video, Marr tweeted, ‘Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now.’ This indicates Marr’s firm stance against the unauthorized use of The Smiths’ music for political purposes.
It has been reported that The Smiths’ music has been played at multiple Trump rallies, including one in Laconia, New Hampshire. This issue is not unique to The Smiths, as several other musicians, such as Adele, the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John, have also objected to the use of their music by Trump and his team at public events.
Some artists, like the Rolling Stones, have issued cease-and-desist directives to prevent the use of their music at Trump’s campaign events. Despite such actions, there have been instances where Trump’s campaign continued to use the music without authorization.
The Guardian reached out to Marr’s representative for clarification on the steps Marr may take to prevent Trump from using The Smiths’ music in the future.
Marr co-wrote ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ with Smiths frontman Morrissey in 1984. While Morrissey has expressed controversial political views, Marr has been vocal in his opposition to right-wing politics and politicians.
