Jeff Bridges to Return to ‘Tron’ Universe in Upcoming Film ‘Tron: Ares’

Jeff Bridges, the iconic actor known for his role in the ‘Tron’ franchise, is set to return to the grid in the upcoming film ‘Tron: Ares.’ Bridges shared this exciting news on the Film Comment podcast, expressing his eagerness to work alongside Jared Leto, who stars as the titular character Ares in the movie.

The ‘Tron’ series, which began with the original film in 1982, is renowned for its groundbreaking use of computer-generated imagery to create a digital world within a video game. In the sequel, ‘Tron: Legacy,’ Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn, found himself trapped in a more advanced version of the game, facing off against his digital doppelganger, Clu, also portrayed by Bridges through CGI de-aging.

Reflecting on his appearance in ‘Tron: Legacy,’ Bridges humorously remarked that he felt he resembled Bill Maher more than himself due to the de-aging effects. However, he hinted that ‘Tron: Ares’ will feature fewer AI elements and more practical sets, offering a new visual experience for audiences.

While Bridges did not disclose details about his character in the upcoming film, there is speculation that it may not be Kevin Flynn. The storyline of ‘Tron: Legacy’ saw Flynn’s character and Clu being erased from the virtual world, allowing other characters to escape back to reality.

Despite the absence of Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde from the cast of ‘Tron: Ares,’ the focus will be on Leto’s character, promising an intriguing new chapter in the sci-fi saga. With Joachim Rønning at the helm as director and a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, fans can anticipate a fresh take on the beloved ‘Tron’ universe.
