Indonesian Health Minister Urges Public to Prioritize Health and Immunity Amid Influenza Spread

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has urged the public to prioritize their health and immunity as the country grapples with the spread of various influenza variants, including the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), also known as the Singapore Flu. Speaking at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Budi emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong immune system in the face of flu infections, which continue to mutate and pose a threat to public health.

According to the Ministry of Health’s report, as of the 11th week of 2024, over 5,000 individuals have been infected with the Singapore Flu in Indonesia. HFMD is caused by Coxsackievirus A16 and Coxsackievirus A6, which belong to the enterovirus group. The virus is present in nasal and throat secretions, saliva, feces, and fluid from skin blisters, and its symptoms include mouth ulcers, skin blisters, sore throat, and mouth pain.

Budi clarified that while HFMD is a cause for concern, it is not as deadly as other influenza variants such as bird flu. He advised the public to prioritize adequate sleep, nutrition, and stamina to combat the virus. The characteristic reddish, rubbery spots on the palms of the hands, mouth, and feet are indicative of Singapore Flu, and individuals experiencing these symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention.

The Health Minister’s warning comes as the country grapples with the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and the threat of influenza outbreaks. With the flu virus continuously mutating, maintaining robust immunity and following health guidelines are crucial in safeguarding public health.
