Individual Builds Versatile Robot for Household Chores

There has been a growing excitement for a Jetsons-like robotic future over the past half-century, but the reality is that robotic assistants in our day-to-day lives are still limited to niche uses. However, one individual, Jim, has taken matters into his own hands by embarking on the construction of a versatile robot named the Lawny Five. This tracked vehicle, currently under remote control, is designed to handle tasks such as mowing the lawn and eventually plowing the driveway, with potential for other applications.

The Lawny Five features a frame equipped with caster wheels at the front to leverage the differential steering of its tracks. This setup allows for the attachment of a mower, plow, or other tools, with an attachment system based on a 2″ receiver hitch. This design enables the robot to switch tools at will while maintaining the original functionality of the tools. In initial tests, the robotic platform demonstrated its capability by effortlessly maneuvering a wet lawn with a 20° slope, without causing any damage to the grass.

With the core build completed, Jim is well on his way to creating a robotic lawnmower, and potentially an autonomous one at that. The Lawny Five’s ability to accommodate interchangeable tools opens up possibilities for diverse applications, such as parking a boat in a confined space near Jim’s house. For those managing larger areas of land, there are other robotic platforms available to assist with tasks like planting, watering, and weeding.

Jim’s initiative serves as a testament to the potential for individuals to drive the robotic revolution in household chores, paving the way for a future where robotic assistants play a more significant role in easing physical workloads.
