On March 24, 2024, the only In-N-Out Burger location in Oakland, California, will be closing its doors due to a surge in crime. The decision to shut down the restaurant comes as a result of ongoing incidents of car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies targeting both customers and employees.
In a statement, Chief Operating Officer Danny Warwick expressed gratitude for the local community’s support over the 18 years of operation, acknowledging the negative impact the closure will have on associates and their families. Despite being a busy and profitable location, the company prioritizes the safety and well-being of its customers and associates, deeming it unacceptable to operate in an unsafe environment.
Efforts to deter crime and enhance safety at the Oakland location have proven unsuccessful, leading to the difficult decision to cease operations. The Oakland Police Department has not responded to inquiries about crime reports at the business, but data from the San Francisco Chronicle reveals a concerning pattern, including nine robberies, two commercial burglaries, four domestic violence incidents, and a staggering 1,174 car break-ins.
One employee shared her experience of having her car windows smashed by thieves last year, highlighting the pervasive nature of criminal activities in the area.
Despite the closure, In-N-Out Burger has assured current employees that they will have the opportunity to work at nearby locations or receive a severance package. The remaining In-N-Out restaurants in Alameda, San Leandro, Union City, and San Ramon will continue to serve customers in the vicinity.
The decision to close the Oakland location reflects the company’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its patrons and staff. As the community bids farewell to this longstanding establishment, the impact of crime on businesses and local communities remains a pressing concern.
