Importance of Early Detection in Cancer Treatment

Early detection is crucial when it comes to treating cancer. Shamilla Mirza, a 49-year-old woman, discovered a pea-shaped lump in her breast and promptly sought medical assistance. Her proactive approach led to an early diagnosis and subsequent treatment for breast cancer.

Shamilla’s experience emphasizes the importance of promptly addressing any abnormalities in the body. While it may turn out to be nothing serious, early detection of cancer can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and survival.

Following the discovery of the lump, Shamilla’s general practitioner referred her to a breast clinic for comprehensive tests. The diagnosis of breast cancer came as a shock to the mother of two, but she found strength in the unwavering support of her family.

Subsequently, Shamilla underwent a mastectomy, a surgical procedure involving the removal of breast tissue, and opted for breast reconstruction. This was followed by a course of chemotherapy, marking her courageous battle against the disease.

Reflecting on her journey, Shamilla expressed profound gratitude to the National Health Service (NHS) and her family for providing her with the resilience to confront cancer. She firmly believes that the early diagnosis and timely treatment were pivotal in ensuring her presence for her family, particularly her sons Zakir and Zain.

In a heartwarming gesture, Shamilla unveiled a special park bench in 2019 to commemorate her triumph over cancer. The bench serves as a tribute to the relentless efforts of scientists, doctors, and nurses in advancing the fight against this formidable disease. The inscription on the bench eloquently states, ‘Shamilla Mirza loved sitting here… and still does.’
