Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Basketball Team Kicks Off European Tour with Victory in Italy

The Illinois Fighting Illini women’s basketball team has kicked off their European tour with a thrilling victory in their first exhibition game in Italy. Following their impressive championship win at the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) in April, the Illini are currently exploring Italy while competing in a couple of exhibition matches.

In their inaugural game held on August 4, 2024, the Illini faced off against a select team comprised of players from Spain and Italy, emerging victorious with a close score of 67-65. Senior player Adalia McKenzie led the scoring for the Illini, contributing 11 points, while fifth-year center Kendall Bostic showcased her skills with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Head coach Shauna Green emphasized the significance of this trip beyond just the games. She noted that while the outcomes of these exhibition matches are not crucial, they provide an invaluable opportunity for team bonding and practicing together in a competitive environment. The trip is designed to enhance team chemistry and prepare the players for the upcoming season.

In addition to their on-court activities, the Illini have been immersing themselves in Italian culture. The team enjoyed a stroll through the historic streets of Florence and even participated in a pizza-making class, which added a fun and educational element to their travels.

The Illini are set to play their second and final exhibition game on Friday night against the Amilla Peristeriou team. This match will serve as another chance for the players to showcase their skills and further solidify their teamwork ahead of the regular season.

As the team continues their journey through Italy, fans and followers of the Illinois Fighting Illini are excited to see how the players develop both on and off the court during this enriching experience. The trip not only allows the athletes to compete internationally but also helps them grow as a cohesive unit, which is essential for their success in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Illinois Fighting Illini women’s basketball team as they continue their European adventure, and follow their progress as they prepare for a promising season ahead.
