IGN Entertainment has recently made headlines in the gaming industry by acquiring the renowned Gamer Network family of digital brands. This acquisition includes popular publications such as GamesIndustry.biz, Eurogamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247, and Dicebreaker.
The acquisition, which was completed for an undisclosed sum, has resulted in some workforce changes within the UK-based organization. Unfortunately, this transition has led to certain redundancies across the Gamer Network portfolio.
Gamer Network’s extensive portfolio also includes Eurogamer with its six local language editions, as well as shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry, and Hookshot, which operates Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox, and Time Extension.
IGN Entertainment, a division of Ziff Davis known for platforms like IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat, and Humble Bundle, finalized the acquisition from ReedPop, the organizer of events like PAX and New York Comic-Con. ReedPop had initially acquired the Gamer Network business back in 2018.
However, certain entities such as UK-based events EGX and MCM, along with the digital brand Popverse, have not been included in this recent sale and will remain under ReedPop’s ownership.
This acquisition marks a significant shift in the gaming media landscape, consolidating key players under the IGN Entertainment umbrella. The move is expected to bring about new opportunities and synergies within the industry.
