High-Tech Prostate Cancer Treatment Now Available in Hawaii

A high-tech treatment for prostate cancer has recently become available in Hawaii, marking a significant advancement in healthcare for the state. Kuakini Medical Center has become the first healthcare facility in Hawaii to offer the Robotic focal HIFU, or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, a non-invasive procedure that utilizes heat to destroy cancerous cells in low-grade early-stage tumors without causing harm to healthy tissue.

Dr. Herbert Chin, a urologist at Kuakini Medical Center, explained that the procedure involves the insertion of a probe without the use of blades, needles, scarring, or radiation. The outpatient treatment typically takes about an hour, allowing patients to return home on the same day. Importantly, the Robotic Focal HIFU is a repeatable procedure and does not limit patients’ future options for receiving radiation or surgery.

This groundbreaking development in cancer treatment has the potential to significantly improve the quality of care available to individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer in Hawaii. The availability of this cutting-edge technology at Kuakini Medical Center represents a major milestone in the state’s healthcare landscape, providing patients with access to advanced treatment options that were previously unavailable locally.

The introduction of the Robotic focal HIFU at Kuakini Medical Center underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance medical services and bring innovative treatments to the residents of Hawaii. This development aligns with the broader goal of expanding access to state-of-the-art healthcare solutions and improving patient outcomes across the region.
