A heartwarming Mardi Gras parade was organized in Covington for 5-year-old Ava Thomas, who has been bravely battling cystic fibrosis. Ava, who recently underwent a life-saving double lung transplant, was unable to participate in the festive Carnival season due to her health condition. In response, the community came together to bring the joy of Mardi Gras to her doorstep.

Ava’s journey with cystic fibrosis began when she was just three weeks old, and in 2022, her condition rapidly worsened, leading to hospitalization. Her only hope was a lung transplant, and after months of waiting, suitable lungs became available. Ava underwent a successful transplant surgery in November 2022 and spent months in the hospital and undergoing extensive physical therapy before finally returning home to Covington in June 2023.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office expressed their support for Ava, stating, ‘When we heard she couldn’t attend Mardi Gras, we brought Mardi Gras to her.’ This heartwarming gesture was shared on social media, garnering widespread support and admiration for the community’s efforts to bring joy to Ava’s life during her challenging journey.
