Grimmway Farms Recalls Carrots Due to E. Coli Contamination

In a significant health alert, Grimmway Farms has announced a recall of organic whole and baby carrots that may have been contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. This recall impacts 19 different brands across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, and was voluntarily initiated by the company on Saturday.

The recall comes in light of an outbreak linked to these carrots, which has resulted in 39 reported illnesses and one fatality. E. coli O121:H19 is known to cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, the infection can lead to more serious conditions, including hemolytic uremic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and neurological issues.

Grimmway Farms has urged consumers who may have purchased the affected products to check their kitchens. Although the contaminated carrots should no longer be available in stores, it’s possible that some consumers still have them at home. The company has advised that any carrots from the affected brands should not be consumed and should be discarded immediately to prevent any health risks.

The FDA has been involved in monitoring the situation, and Grimmway Farms is cooperating with health authorities to ensure the safety and quality of their products. Jeff Huckaby, the president and CEO of Grimmway Farms, emphasized the company’s commitment to food safety, stating, “The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities.” He also mentioned that the company is conducting a thorough review of its growing, harvesting, and processing practices.

Consumers are reminded to clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated carrots. Those experiencing symptoms or concerned about possible exposure are advised to seek medical attention.

The following brands of organic whole carrots are included in the recall:

  • 365: Available in 1lb, 2lb, and 5lb bags with no best-if-used-by date.
