As the vibrant summer season unfolds in Western Pennsylvania, the Greensburg Night Market is back for its sixth season, showcasing an impressive expansion and a commitment to supporting local businesses. This beloved community event, which has grown from modest beginnings, is set to captivate attendees once again.
Jessica Hickey, the owner of the Downtown Greensburg Project, has been at the helm of the Night Market since its inception. The market began with just one block of food and craft booths in 2019, but it has rapidly evolved into a bustling event that now spans four blocks, featuring over 150 vendors and more than 40 sponsors. This year’s second Night Market of the season occurs on Thursday evening, promising to draw large crowds eager to explore the diverse offerings.
Hickey’s journey to this point has not been without challenges. Following her first season as manager, she faced personal tragedies that profoundly impacted her life. In 2019, she lost her mother to a brain aneurysm, and less than a year later, her father passed away from colon cancer. These events plunged Hickey into a deep depression, leaving her feeling unprepared to continue with the Night Market.
“That was super rough,” Hickey reflected. “It took me a good year and a half to get my head on straight and be like, ‘all right, get it together.’” Despite the emotional toll, Hickey found the strength to push forward, ultimately leading to the Night Market’s remarkable growth.
The market operates under the Downtown Greensburg Project, an advertising agency that Hickey co-founded in 2015 with her friend, Ashley Reefer. The Night Market was one of their first initiatives and has since become the agency’s flagship event, showcasing local talent and products while fostering community spirit. Hickey and Reefer are even exploring plans to replicate the Night Market concept in Philadelphia and Indiana later this year.
Taking place on the fourth Thursday of each month from April through November, with a few exceptions, the Night Market has become a staple in the community. It runs from 5:30 PM to 9 PM, attracting thousands of visitors from across Western Pennsylvania, as well as neighboring states like Ohio and West Virginia. Shuttle buses transport attendees from nearby Nicely Elementary School, further facilitating access to the event.
Despite the Night Market’s success, Hickey acknowledges the challenges that come with such popularity. “We get it. I’m overwhelmed with it sometimes,” she admitted, referring to the crowds that gather each month. However, she remains committed to ensuring a positive experience for all attendees and vendors alike.
As the Night Market continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to Hickey’s resilience and dedication to her community. By providing a platform for local artisans and small businesses, the market not only enriches the local economy but also fosters a sense of unity and celebration among residents.
The Night Market is more than just a series of booths; it represents the heart and soul of Greensburg, where community members come together to support one another, celebrate local culture, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that only a night market can provide.
With each passing month, the Greensburg Night Market solidifies its place as a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the best of what the region has to offer. As it enters its sixth season, the market is poised to continue its legacy of growth, community engagement, and celebration of local entrepreneurship.
