Green Day is set to mark the 30th anniversary of their album ‘Dookie’ and the 20th anniversary of ‘American Idiot’ in a unique way. The band has announced that they will be performing both iconic albums in their entirety during their upcoming summer stadium tour. This special tour will also feature the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas.
Mike Dirnt, the bassist of Green Day, expressed his excitement for this unprecedented event, stating, ‘We’ve never done anything like this before. And there’s a really good chance we’ll never do it again.’ The band plans to allocate approximately 90 minutes to play both albums, leaving an additional 35 to 45 minutes for other performances. Dirnt also hinted at the exciting production possibilities that these albums will offer.
Despite the band’s extensive experience, they are still deliberating over whether to commence the show with ‘Dookie’ or ‘American Idiot.’ Dirnt emphasized the significance of preproduction in determining the overall look, feel, and sound of the tour, underscoring the band’s commitment to delivering a memorable experience for their fans.
While the setlist will include tracks from their new LP, Saviors, Green Day remains dedicated to including their classic hits in every performance. Dirnt emphasized the unique energy that arises when performing timeless favorites such as ‘She,’ ‘Basket Case,’ and ‘Welcome to Paradise’ live, highlighting the band’s enduring enthusiasm for these songs.
Additionally, Dirnt expressed his anticipation for reuniting with the Smashing Pumpkins on the tour, reflecting on the significance of both bands’ longevity and continued relevance in the music industry.
The highly-anticipated tour is scheduled to commence on June 29 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., and will conclude on September 28 at Petco Park in San Diego. Prior to the tour, Green Day will be performing at various festivals.
