Actress Susan Buckner, best known for her role as Patty Simcox in the iconic 1978 musical Grease, has passed away at the age of 72. The news of her death was confirmed by her family’s publicist, Melissa Berthier, who stated that Susan died peacefully on May 2 surrounded by loved ones.
Born in 1952 in Seattle, Susan Buckner initially gained recognition in the pageant world, winning Miss Washington in 1971 and later representing the state in the Miss America competition. Transitioning into the entertainment industry, she became part of The Golddiggers, an all-female singing and dancing group featured on The Dean Martin Show. Buckner also made appearances on popular shows like The Mac Davis Show, Sonny and Cher, and The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.
However, it was her role as Patty Simcox in Grease that solidified her place in Hollywood. Her portrayal of the cheerful cheerleader alongside Olivia Newton-John’s character resonated with audiences, making her a familiar face to millions.
Despite her success in Grease and subsequent acting gigs in the 1980s, Susan Buckner decided to step back from show business to focus on raising her two children. Later in life, she dedicated her time to directing children’s theater at a Florida elementary school and teaching dance at a gym in Coral Gables.
Susan Buckner is survived by her daughter Samantha Mansfield, son Adam Josephs, grandchildren Oliver, Riley, Abigail, and Ruby, as well as her sister Linda, daughter-in-law Noel Josephs, son-in-law Adam Mansfield, and longtime partner Al.
