The GPD G1, also known as the ‘GPU box’, is set to receive a significant upgrade, making it even more appealing to creative professionals. This external GPU allows users to enhance their laptop’s graphics without having to invest in a new machine or manually replace the GPU. Additionally, it can function as a docking station, catering to the needs of modern business laptops.
While the GPD G1 continues to operate on the Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU, it has undergone improvements in three key areas. Firstly, a physical toggle has been introduced next to the existing power button, enabling users to switch between silent and balanced modes. In silent mode, the Total Graphics Power is restricted to 60W, ensuring minimal noise during operation. On the other hand, balanced mode increases the TGP to 100W, delivering a more consistent experience.
Another enhancement comes in the form of an upgraded Thunderbolt 4 controller. The HDMI interface now supports high refresh rates, addressing the signal interference that previously limited it to 4K/60Hz output. With this upgrade, the HDMI interface can now achieve 4K/120Hz output, providing an improved visual experience.
Furthermore, the USB4 port has been upgraded to support a 65W power supply, a notable improvement from the previous 60W PSU. This enhancement ensures compatibility with certain Surface and Lenovo thin and light notebook models, addressing previous power supply issues. The upgraded GPD G1 is nearing mass production and is expected to be released by the end of the month.
