Google’s AI Overviews Showing Less Frequently, Reddit Drops from Top 10 Most Cited Domains

Google’s AI Overviews are now showing less frequently, with Reddit no longer among the top 10 most cited domains, according to recent data analysis. This reduction comes after Google faced criticism for providing users with incorrect and misleading AI-generated answers.

Two separate SEO platforms, SEOClarity and SERanking, conducted analyses on thousands of keywords to shed light on the changes in AI Overviews visibility. The findings reveal a significant decrease in the appearance of AI Overviews in search results.

According to the research, AI Overviews now show for 8.71% of searches, as reported by SERanking, down from a previous 64% when it was known as Search Generative Experience. On the other hand, SEOClarity found that AI Overviews appeared in only 7.6% of searches, a decrease from 17.4% observed in a previous period.

One notable shift highlighted in the analysis is the decline in Reddit’s visibility within AI Overviews. Previously among the top 10 most cited domains, Reddit has now been replaced by websites such as runnersworld.com, healthline.com, and linkedin.com.

Further insights from the research indicate that a majority of AI Overviews link to domains that also appear in Google’s top 10 organic search results. Additionally, featured snippets and AI Overviews tend to co-occur, with citations aligning a significant percentage of the time.

On average, AI Overviews consist of 4,342 characters and are often accompanied by ads in search results. These AI-generated answers are most prevalent in categories such as Relationships, Food and Beverage, and Technology.

Despite the challenges faced during the early stages of AI Overviews, Google remains committed to evolving its search experience towards becoming an answer engine. This transition may require brands and businesses to adapt to a new landscape with potentially reduced organic traffic.

The reports from SERanking and SEOClarity provide valuable insights into the changing landscape of AI Overviews and their impact on search results. As Google continues to refine its AI capabilities, the search engine landscape is poised for further transformation.
