Google recently unveiled the latest version of its Android TV OS, based on Android 14, at the Google I/O event. This new update brings significant enhancements, including a focus on reducing power consumption and introducing a highly anticipated feature – picture-in-picture mode.
The picture-in-picture mode allows users to multitask by running one app in full screen while having another app open in a small window simultaneously. This feature opens up various possibilities for users, such as displaying live sports scores, monitoring smart home devices, conducting video calls, or tracking health and fitness data.
However, it’s important to note that the picture-in-picture mode will be available on ‘qualified Android 14 TV models,’ indicating that not all devices may support this new functionality. Additionally, users won’t be able to run two media apps simultaneously in this mode.
Android 14 for TV also promises improved performance and faster startup times, with some devices experiencing up to a 4-second reduction in boot times. The update aims to enhance performance on low-memory devices as well.
Moreover, the new OS version introduces power-saving features, including Low Energy mode, which disables network connectivity when the TV is idle, and Increased Energy mode, which keeps the network active for Google Home functions. The Optimized Energy mode strikes a balance by allowing essential features like Google Cast and Google Assistant to remain connected while the TV is off.
In terms of accessibility, Android 14 for TV brings new features like color correction for users with color vision deficiencies, enhanced text options for those with vision impairments, and improved navigation for users with motor disabilities.
Google also shared that the Android TV OS now boasts 220 million monthly active devices, marking a 47% increase from the previous year. The company encourages developers to transition their apps from the old Leanback UI toolkit to the new Compose for TV system for improved performance and user experience.
The update also includes advancements like the use of Gemini AI to generate movie and TV show descriptions in the user’s native language on the home screen’s Featured carousel. Additionally, Google is transitioning from APKs to app bundles, resulting in storage savings of around 20%.
