Google Rebrands AI Products as Gemini, Releases New App for Android

Google has made a significant change in the world of artificial intelligence by rebranding its AI products under a new name, Gemini. The company has renamed its Bard chatbot to Gemini and has introduced a dedicated Gemini app for Android. Additionally, all Duet AI features in Google Workspace have been incorporated into the Gemini brand. This move signifies Google’s focus on consolidating its AI offerings under a unified identity.

One of the key developments is the release of Gemini Ultra 1.0, the most extensive version of Google’s large language model, to the public. This release marks a pivotal moment in Google’s AI journey, emphasizing the company’s commitment to making AI more accessible and integrated into everyday experiences.

With the launch of mobile apps, Gemini is set to become more prevalent in users’ daily interactions. The new app on Android allows users to set Gemini as their default assistant, replacing Google Assistant in certain functionalities. While Google has not indicated a complete phase-out of Assistant, it is evident that Gemini represents the future direction of the company’s AI efforts.

Sissie Hsiao, who oversees Gemini at Google, views this transition as a crucial step towards building a comprehensive AI assistant that is conversational, multimodal, and more helpful than ever before. Gemini is positioned as a hybrid solution, encompassing elements of an assistant, chatbot, and search engine, reflecting Google’s ambition to create a versatile AI platform.

Although there is no dedicated Gemini app for iOS, users can access all AI features through the Google app. Notably, Google has integrated a toggle in the app, allowing users to switch between Search and Gemini, highlighting the growing significance of Gemini within Google’s product ecosystem.

Furthermore, the rebranding of Bard to Gemini and the consolidation of AI features in Google Workspace signal a strategic shift in Google’s approach to AI. By unifying its AI offerings under the Gemini brand, Google aims to streamline its product portfolio and enhance the coherence of its AI ecosystem.
